Crossing the Atlantic Ocean
I don’t know why but crossing the Atlantic Ocean has always been a dream for me. The Atlantic Ocean is magic and somehow unpredictable. The massive ocean against a sailboat. You have windy days and quiet days, you have huge waves and you have a smooth surface. You will feel pretty small in the middle of the ocean when there is only water for as long as you can see. How do I react when being at sea for several days without any land to the horizon? Well, that is for sure I will find out. How do I work under pressure if the weather is getting hard? I have to take part in sailing the boat, and steer the boat through the night – we have a shift of 4 hours. How do I deal with being close together with other people in a little space? This is something I have to experience.
I will start my journey as a crew member on S/Y Aquilla in the Canary Island. From there we will sail to Cape Verde where the last crew member will get on the boat. While waiting for the wind to turn in the right direction we will explore the islands of Cape Verde.
I will write more on the way and keep you updated on how life onboard the boat is going.
